The Hidden Sound – Workshop by Nicola Agus

Reading promotion activities, creative recycling, and sounds from around the world

September 9 | 10 | 17 | 19 | 24 | 26 – from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM

The workshop “The Hidden Sound” was conceived with the idea of combining literature and music through a creative and immersive journey. The aim is to actively and engagingly promote reading, stimulating participants’ creativity by having them build musical instruments and later experiment with them in an orchestral ensemble of sounds and voices.

The workshop, for both teenagers and adults, is structured into 6 sessions, each lasting two hours, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, at the Scuola Pirandello in Cagliari, during the month of September.

To participate in the workshop, it is necessary to register by completing the form below. The workshop is free, and at the end of the course, all participants who attend at least 4 sessions will receive a certificate of participation.

Objectives

  • Stimulate creativity and craftsmanship through the construction of musical instruments.
  • Promote reading in an interactive way, using music as a vehicle for narrative exploration.
  • Create a link between physical travel and sound journey, exploring sounds from different cultures.
  • Develop collaboration and teamwork through the formation of a small orchestra.
  • Increase awareness of the importance of sound and music in storytelling and artistic expression.

The Sessions

1st Meeting – Tuesday, September 9th
The session will begin with a sound demonstration dedicated to discovering the “hidden sound” of material objects, with particular attention to the use of paper and books. Participants will witness a performance by the instructor where the book is not just a reading vehicle, but becomes a musical instrument and an expressive medium. From the sound of the book as an object, the focus will shift to the sound of the voice, with a reading of selected passages aloud to explore the sonic and interpretative potential of the text.
Following this, the instructor will present and play instruments built using recycled materials, concrete examples of how everyday objects can be transformed into original sound devices. Participants will then be invited to imagine and design their own instrument to be built during the workshop.

2nd Meeting – Wednesday, September 10th
The session will begin with a reading aloud of new excerpts from the texts that accompany the workshop journey, offering participants another opportunity to explore sound through words. Afterward, the instructor will offer a musical demonstration with string instruments he has made himself, highlighting the expressive potential of simple, recycled materials.
Each participant, with the instructor’s support, will develop a personalized project idea, considering which materials might be useful to complete and optimize the creation of their instrument.

3rd Meeting – Wednesday, September 17th
The session will begin with a reading aloud of selected excerpts from the reference texts, continuing the journey of listening to and interpreting the word as a sonic and collective experience.
Following this, the workshop will move into its practical phase: each participant will begin constructing their own instrument using collected leftover materials. Guided by the instructor, participants will shape rudimentary but functional musical instruments, inspired by the sound traditions of the world. This activity will provide an opportunity to hands-on experiment with the creative transformation of material into sound, enhancing ingenuity, culture, and individual expression.

4th Meeting – Friday, September 19th
The session will start with the usual reading aloud of passages from the reference texts, a moment that continues to accompany and inspire the workshop work through the evocative power of the word.
Participants will then continue building their instruments, focusing on technical and sound aspects. With the instructor’s support, each participant will refine their creation, checking its functionality and making adjustments to improve its acoustic performance and expressiveness.

5th Meeting – Wednesday, September 24th
The session will begin with a new reading aloud, with excerpts chosen from the reference texts, continuing the exploration of the connection between word and sound in an expressive and participatory way.
Following this, participants will finalize the construction of their own instruments, making the last structural and aesthetic adjustments. Once the construction phase is completed, the instruments will undergo a sound test: a moment for practical verification and discovery of the timbral potential of each creation. Finally, the first attempts at integrating the text reading with the sound produced by the self-made instruments will begin, experimenting with a direct dialogue between voice, rhythm, and material.

6th Meeting – Friday, September 26th
The final meeting will be dedicated to a final jam session, where reading and sound will merge in a collective performance. The orchestra of voices and sounds will be the concluding act of the workshop, where participants will experiment with reading as a form of collective harmony, accompanied by sound.
The voice and the self-built instruments will become part of a single sound landscape, creating a moment of shared experience where word and music intertwine. Together, participants will work on rhythms, tones, and nuances, aiming to create a choral melody made of uniqueness: each voice and sound will contribute to composing a common, expressive, and authentic sound story.
